Attack on Our Power Grid: The Existential Threat No One Is Talking About

Attack on Our Power Grid

The U.S. power grid is highly vulnerable to an attack by an EMP weapon or a solar event. Such an attack on the power grid could throw the U.S. back into the dark ages. It would take years to build our system back up. Some experts believe that a year without power would kill as many as 9 out of 10 Americans.

Most experts say it is not a matter of if but when.

We know what to do about it and an act called The Shield Act could provide the protection we need for our power grid. The Act still sits in committee in the House. The Senate is looking to pass a similar bill but nothing has happened yet. Their inaction could cost us our very civilization. Mr. Obama doesn’t feel the need to use his pen and phone for this issue because he is too busy fundamentally transforming our country domestically.

PG&E Corp.’s Metcalf transmission substation was attacked by unknown persons last April. The attack began before 1 a.m. A person or persons “slipped into an underground vault and cut telephone cables.” By 13:30, snipers opened fire for 19 minutes and “knocked out 17 giant transformers that funnel power to Silicon Valley.” The shooter(s) then disappeared into the night.

The transformers weren’t completely destroyed and utility workers were able to repair them after 27 days. Power had been rerouted preventing a blackout to Silicon Valley, home of Facebook, Google, Yahoo, and so on.

More than 100 rounds were fired by a high powered rifle.

The FBI calls it the act of vandalism but a former PG&E official said it was not the work of amateurs. He believes it was a trial run for future attacks.

The Wall Street Journal’s Rebecca Smith, who uncovered the information, quotes Jon Wellinghoff — chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission at the time of the attack — as saying it was “the most significant incident of domestic terrorism involving the grid that has ever occurred” in the U.S.

Utilities throughout the U.S. did respond by checking their security but much more needs to be done. We need The Shield Act.

If the grid goes down, everything goes down…our enemies are preparing to launch an EMP attack:

North Korea claims to have a “Super-EMP” weapon and Iran has tested ballistic missiles in an EMP mode, claiming success. It is believed by our experts that these countries are working in tandem to create such a weapon. Their scientists in the field regularly travel back-and-forth between the two countries.

SAM missiles from rogue nations, confiscated by undercover FBI, some from N. Korea, have been deemed powerful enough to launch an EMP attack.

Listen to Frank Gaffney:

John Holdren and his British counterpart, John Beddington, stated in an op-ed on 3/10/11 that a solar flare could have catastrophic events. Space weather can affect human safety and economies anywhere in the world, sending blasts of electrically-charged gas from the sun at up to five million miles an hour and it can happen with little warning.

Holdren wrote, “Their impact could be big — on the order of $2 trillion during the first year in the United States alone, with a recovery period of 4 to 10 years.”

While Holdren and Beddington said there was commitment on both sides of the Atlantic to implement  the technology fixes to shield our electric grid from such a catastrophe, nothing has happened and they have not evaluated the dangers of solar flares or a nuclear EMP attack.

The governments have chosen to study the lucrative cyber-warfare instead.

The last solar flare to hit the United States was in 1859 and we are due for another one.

The Shield Act would prepare us for an EMP attack or a solar event. Not preparing could lead to the obliteration of our power grid, leaving us helpless before our enemies.

According to FrontPage Magazine, The Shield Act :

Is a public-private partnership, requires no taxpayer money and its purpose is to protect our electrical grid.
It would require US utilities to harden large transformers and other key elements of the nation’s power.
It calls on the federal government to establish protection standards and hardware solutions in concert with industry, and includes a provision for cost recovery should industry incur substantial costs.
The EMP Commission and the Strategic Posture Commission have warned in detailed reports of the catastrophic destruction an EMP attack or similar solar event would have on the American way of life. Similar reports have been issued by the administration’s own Department of Energy, and by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

Not protecting against such events is like playing Russian roulette, EMP expert John Kappenman told Front Page Magazine, “If you play Russian roulette long enough, you will lose.” In this case, Congress is playing Russian roulette with the entire American people.

The EMP Commission and the Strategic Posture Commission, the U.S. DOE and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission have warned of the catastrophic destruction in the event of an EMP attack or solar event.

A report from 2004, EMP Commission to Assess the Threat of An EMP Attack to the United States determined that a single EMP warhead exploded over the center of the US could bring down the entire power grid. A solar event could do the same.

EMPact America believes it would cost only $60-$100 million, chump change for this administration, to protect the 300 largest transformers running the grid, and another $400 million to $600 million to protect an additional 3,000 transformers. It would be a one-time cost. We spent as much on the healthcare.gov website.

How distant such an event is cannot be known but isn’t it better to be protected? Foreign enemies launch attacks on our grids regularly. It would be their dream to destroy it.

Americans should prepare in case. Prepare for a long blackout. You need food, water, medicine to last for months or a year.
