Vladimir Putin pulls no punches in an interview with Corriere della Sera. See the full transcript below.

Luciano Fontana: I would like to start with a question concerning Russian-Italian relations. This relationship has always been close and privileged, both in the economic and political spheres. However, it has been somewhat marred by the crisis in Ukraine and the sanctions. Could the recent visit by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi to Russia and your upcoming visit to Milan somehow change this trend, and if so, what is needed for that?

Preparing for an apocalypse in America

Preparing for an apocalypse in America

The American Preppers Network is a group of people storing supplies, equipment and ammunition in case an end of the world disaster strikes the U.S. RT visits one such family.

A typical house in a regular suburban town, but here – a family is preparing for the end of the world.

A German Mauser and P-38 from the Second World War, a twelve-gage shot gun, a forty caliber pistol and an AR-15 – weapons and ammunition are key.

“If we are carrying this out on the street for some reason – all hell broke out. It’s an end of the world type situation. You can’t walk around with these guns here,” said Keith Proskura.

A certified NRA instructor and owner of two businesses, he stores food and supplies to help him survive no matter what disaster might hit.

“Brake down of government is one thing a lot of people are preparing for now. We are facing possible pay delays for social security. I am not going to need all of this stuff for that, but you are going to have a lot of Americans who are upset,” he explained.Sold-Out-After-A-Crisis

The 37 year old is among thousands of American preppers who would rather be ready than sorry. RT spoke with Tom Martin – the founder of the Preppers Network – from inside his truck.

“It’s not so much political, but more economic. I see people every day lose their jobs and have to rely on food that they have stored up previously to live on that food, just because they’ve lost their jobs,” said Martin.

Gas masks, bullet-proof vests, canned food, tents and helmets fill basement like this one.

A prepper’s survival bag is not a regular first aid kit. It includes things like a parachute cord, a survival knife, a meal ready to eat, a body heat-retaining space blanket and bagged emergency drinking water. According to preppers, one must also be ready for chemical catastrophies, or a large-scale terrorist attack.

“If contaminates land on top of you, you’ve got to have a couple of pairs of gloves on. Your feet will slip into a chemical-proof boot. If you go into an unknown situation you are going to want to have one that’s fully incapsulated. So that you are 100 percent sure that nothing will get through to you,” said Keith Proskura.

A variety of walkie-talkies are ready for use if the communication network shuts down. On the other end of the line is Keith’s father, John Proskura, who is actually in the next room. A police officer for 25 years, he is now retired; his main past time is operating a ham radio. For him, communications will be key if disaster strikes.

“The tsunami and earthquake in Japan a couple of months ago – amateur radio played a big part in that in providing emergency communication. And the big hurricane in Haiti a couple of years ago,” said the man.

There is one scenario he fears more than others.

“If there was some kind of a nuclear fall-out, radio wave propagation would probably for all practical purposes seize,” said John.

Around $10,000 is the hefty price tag for these supplies.

But to preppers, it’s not just ten grand sitting in a basement – with uncertainty taking over the US, they say those who seem paranoid today may end up being the smartest tomorrow.

New Hampshire Proposes Ban on ‘Police State’

New Hampshire Proposes Ban on ‘Police State’

With exception to arming the state’s National Guard, New Hampshire House Bill 407 — the Police Equipment and Community Engagement Act — would bar officials from possessing any military equipment “not readily available in an open national commercial market.”

New Hampshire’s HB407 would effectively bring the state’s participation in the 1033 program to an end. The program has supplied New Hampshire localities with more than $6,000,000 in military gear, the legislation’s text states. However…

“New Hampshire cities and towns are required to repair and maintain this additional military grade hardware that consumes limited town and city funds that are needed for other functions.”

In response to increasing police militarization in the US and the cost of doing so, legislation proposed in the New Hampshire state House would implement a ban on state and local officials obtaining or using certain military weaponry acquired from the Pentagon or other sources.

The militarization of state and local law enforcement agencies by federal programs which are dispensing “weapons and tactics of war, with almost no public discussion or oversight.” may be coming to an end in New Hampshire. While the state is certainly low in the overall rankings of state’s which might be considered ‘police states’, New Hampshire is saying ‘no more’.

Local police forces across the United States have benefited from the militarized mindset of the post-9/11, “war on terror” era, as wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and funding from the likes of the US Department of Homeland Security have resulted in a mass proliferation of military-grade weaponry.

One way the US government distributes combat gear to local police departments is through the US Department of Defense’s 1033 program, in which the Pentagon offers hundreds of millions of dollars of surplus military equipment to police forces throughout the US.

One major problem for the cities and towns who acquire these freebies from the US government is the extraordinary high cost of maintaining the equipment (at taxpayers expense).

New Hampshire has apparently come to the realization that a ‘police state’ is not necessary and it’s just not worth it to keep and maintain equipment and weaponry that’s meant for ‘war’…
Do you think that other states will adopt this attitude? Or only just a few (or just NH)?

Death toll in Ukraine conflict doubles in 2 weeks, reaches 2,086 – UN

The number of killed and wounded in eastern Ukraine has doubled to 2,086 over the last two weeks, according to the UN’s “very conservative estimates”.

“This corresponds to a clear escalating trend,” UN human rights spokeswoman Cecile Pouilly told Reuters in response to a query.

Over 60 people have been killed or wounded every day, Pouilly added.

Almost 5,000 have been wounded.

The figures comprise Ukrainian military, self-defense forces, and civilians. However, those are “very conservative estimates,” Pouilly said.

The Ukraine crisis has been widely described as a humanitarian catastrophe. According to the UN’s latest estimates, over 110,000 people have been internally displaced in the conflict. Moscow has reported that 730,000 people have fled across the border into Russia.

In Donetsk alone, more than 1,000 people have been left homeless due to the fighting, according to the city administration. In Lugansk, another regional center, 250,000 people can’t leave the city and have been without water, electricity, and communications for over a week.

The Russian humanitarian aid is set to arrive to the Russian-Ukrainian border by the end of Wednesday. However, the Ukrainian authorities repeatedly stated that they won’t allow the aid to pass – despite the Red Cross and the OSCE observers watching over the mission.

How to Make a Smoke Grenade

How-to-make-a-smoke-grenade-2-890x395When Should You Use a Smoke Grenade

A smoke grenade may help in different situations. First developed in 1848 by inventor Robert Yale, nowadays smoke grenades have many more uses than their original purpose (fireworks). Smoke grenades are also used by the Military for creation of smoke screens in case of a retreat or flanking maneuvers in order to provide a wall of visual distraction that reduces the accuracy of enemy fire. More so the Army uses smoke grenades to signal their position for air supported attacks.

Non-military uses of smoke grenades vary from signaling your position in case you are lost to fireworks, paintball games, self-defense, protests, spectators, airsoft enthusiasts. However, the smoke grenade class is restricted to signaling and concealment under the laws of war, and thus they are not considered weapons; since the vast majority is non-explosive, the smoke grenade remain legal for civilian use and ownership in most countries. You should be aware that you are fully responsible of these smoke grenades and you should always light them up in a place where things cannot catch fire.
