Experts Warn — A Global Pandemic of a Flu-like Virus Could Kill 900 Million People if it Started to Spread

  • Scientists simulated an outbreak of a deadly virus which spreads like the flu
  • Researchers say experts could not make a vaccine fast enough to save millions
  • The made-up virus killed 150 million people in 20 months in the scenario
  • Experts warn the world is not prepared to deal with an inevitable outbreak

The National Health Commission of China said authorities were also examining 1,072 suspected cases of the virus that first emerged in central city of Wuhan.
A global pandemic of a flu-like virus could kill nearly a billion people if it started to spread tomorrow, scientist have warned.

Experts in the US created a simulation to find out what would happen if a deadly type of influenza virus spread across the globe.

A made-up virus which was spread by coughing managed to kill 150 million people – more than double the UK population – in less than two years in the fictional situation.

The simulation predicted how governments and health authorities around the world would react to a deadly infection spreading so quickly.

And no vaccine had been found by the end of the 20 month scenario – simulated over the course of a day – so the virus could go on to wipe out a huge chunk of the world’s population, an expert said.

Although the situation sounds like something from an apocalypse movie, the researchers said it wasn’t that far-fetched and the world is ‘lucky’ there hasn’t been a global pandemic already.

Beijing: The death toll in China’s viral outbreak has risen to 25, with the number of confirmed cases also leaping to 830, the government said on Friday.
The National Health Commission said authorities were also examining 1,072 suspected cases of the virus that first emerged in central city of Wuhan.

The markedly higher numbers were released just hours after the World Health Organization stopped short of declaring the situation to be a global health emergency.

China has effectively quarantined nearly 20 million people across Wuhan and some nearby cities in response to the virus, and announced measures to curb its spread nationwide as hundreds of millions of people began travelling across the country this week for the Lunar New Year holiday.

Streets and shopping centres in Wuhan, a major industrial and transport hub, are now eerily quiet after authorities told residents not to leave the city of 11 million, where most of the cases have been identified.

The National Health Commission said the death toll was revised upward following eight new deaths on Thursday, and 259 new cases reported across the country.

Out of the total 830 confirmed cases, 177 were in serious condition, it added.

Thirty-four people have been “cured and discharged”.

The respiratory virus emerged from a seafood and animal market in Wuhan and cases have been reported as far away as the United States.

The new virus has caused alarm because of its similarity to SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), which killed nearly 650 people across mainland China and Hong Kong in 2002-2003.

But after two days of talks to determine the level of global concern, the WHO stopped short of declaring a so-called “public health emergency of international concern” — a declaration used for the gravest epidemics.

There are more than 500 confirmed cases and 17 people have died.

Wuhan: The London-sized city where the virus began
Known for now as 2019-nCoV, the virus is understood to be a new strain of coronavirus not previously identified in humans. The Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome) virus that killed nearly 800 people globally in the early 2000s was also a coronavirus, as is the common cold.

All the fatalities so far have been in Hubei, the province around Wuhan.

Meanwhile, after a day of discussions in Geneva, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) emergency committee has announced it will not yet declare a “global emergency” over the new virus.

Director general Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus said more information was needed about the spread of the infection. The committee of health experts will meet again on Thursday.

A global emergency is the highest level of alarm the WHO can sound and has previously been used in response to swine flu, Zika virus and Ebola.

What measures have been announced?
From Thursday, all flights and passenger train services out of Wuhan have been stopped.

Bus, subway and ferry services all shut down from 10:00 local time (02:00 GMT).

A special command centre in Wuhan set up to contain the virus said the move was meant to “resolutely contain the momentum of the epidemic spreading”.

Those living in Wuhan had already been told to avoid crowds and minimise public gatherings.

State news agency Xinhua said tourist attractions and hotels in the city had been told to suspend large-scale activities while libraries, museums and theatres were cancelling exhibitions and performances.

A Lunar New Year prayer-giving ceremony at the city’s Guiyuan Temple, which attracted 700,000 people last year, has also been cancelled.

The hashtag “Wuhan is sealed off” was trending on Chinese social media website Weibo.

One user said worries about food and disinfectant made it feel like “the end of the world”, while another said they were on the “verge of tears” when Chinese officials announced the shut-down.

The WHO’s Dr Ghebreyesus described the latest measures as “very strong” and said they would “not only control the outbreak, they will minimise spread internationally”.

Chinese officials said the country was now at the “most critical stage” of prevention and control.

“Basically, do not go to Wuhan. And those in Wuhan please do not leave the city,” said National Health Commission vice-minister Li Bin in one of the first public briefings since the beginning of the outbreak.

The scientists at Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health Security in Baltimore, Maryland, called the experiment the Clade X simulation – the name of their fictional disease.

Real health experts took part in the experiment, including US politicians Tom Daschle and Susan Brooks, and former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Julie Gerberding.

But they were not able to stop it from spreading and killing millions of people – making experts worried the world is not prepared for a deadly pandemic.

A pandemic happens when a contagious disease spreads all over the world because most people are not immune to it and it cannot be treated quickly enough.

Dr Eric Toner, designer of the simulation, told Business Insider the world is not ready for a deadly disease outbreak.

‘We don’t have the ability to produce vaccines fast enough’

‘We don’t have the ability to produce vaccines to a novel pathogen within months rather than decades,’ he said.

‘And we don’t have the global public health capabilities that would allow us to rapidly identify and control an outbreak before it becomes a pandemic.

He added that healthcare systems around the world would struggle to treat huge numbers of people and potentially fail under the pressure.

‘It will happen, but I don’t know when,’ he added.

Experts designed the virus to be as infectious and as deadly as SARS, which killed 10 per cent of 8,000 people it infected in 2002 and 2003.

SARS could have been much worse, the experts told Business Insider, but it didn’t become fully contagious until patients were already in hospital.

Fictional virus released by terrorists

In the Clade X simulation in May, a virus was engineered and released by a bioterrorist group who wanted to reduce the world’s population.

It was a cross between a parainfluenza virus, which cause respiratory illness similar to the common cold and is spread by close contact or touching contaminated objects, and the Nipah virus, which is rare but can kill people within days.

‘We think this scenario is quite plausible’

‘I think we learned that even very knowledgeable, experienced, devoted senior public officials who have lived through many crises still have trouble dealing with something like this,’ he said.

WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION WARNS HUMANITY IS VULNERABLE

Humanity is ‘vulnerable’ to a pandemic that could kill millions, the chief of the World Health Organization warned in February.

Dr Tedros Adhanom, director general of the WHO, claimed the next outbreak will have a ‘terrible toll’ on the global population and economy.

A plague outbreak in Madagascar last November shook the medical community and left them concerned it would spread across the world rapidly.

And the mosquito-borne Zika virus struck 70 countries in 2016, taking concerned scientists by surprise.

‘A devastating epidemic could start in any country at any time and kill millions of people because we are still not prepared. The world remains vulnerable.

‘We do not know where and when the next global pandemic will occur, but we know it will take a terrible toll both on human life and on the economy.’

In fact, this extremely beneficial plant has the ability to treat allergies, lower cholesterol levels, stimulate the production of bile, and detoxify the liver. It also has diuretic properties and it is especially beneficial for pregnant and menopausal women.

The best time to harvest dandelion root is in the spring, especially in the beginning of April. Make sure you pick it from places which are less polluted, such as areas away from the town and the road.
The best part about dandelion is that all parts of it have medicinal properties. For instance, the leaves are abundant in vitamins and can be used in a salad, along with potatoes and eggs. The stem relieves stomach issues, stimulates the gallbladder function, regulates the metabolism, and purifies the blood. Moreover, the stem can be used to treat diabetes while the milk from the stem can be used to remove warts.

Ultimately, people use dandelion flowers to prepare homemade dandelion syrup which purifies the blood, relieves a cough, and improves digestion.

DANDELION SYRUP RECIPE

Get 400 yellow dandelion flowers and pour 3 liters of water over them. Then, cut 4 oranges and 4 lemons into slices and add them to the mixture. Leave the mixture for 24 hours.

After 24 hours, strain the mixture and pour the liquid into a pot. Add 2 cups of sugar into the pot and cook for about half an hour.

Once the mixture boils and gets thick enough, remove from heat and transfer the syrup into sterilized jars. Use the dandelion syrup to treat cold, cough, or bronchitis.
