The Best Canning Methods For Meat, Fish And Seafood For Your Survival Pantry

Meat, poultry and fish are low acid foods. They must be processed in a pressure canner to assure safety.

Of all the foods I can every year, the most useful is the wide variety of meats. While we aren’t huge meat eaters, these rows and rows of jars of all sizes form the base of many meals throughout the year. And in our hurry-scurry world, it’s so convenient to have this pre-cooked, tender, and oh-so-tasty meat right on the shelves, ready to quickly whip up a meal that tastes like I spent hours preparing it. Lessons Learned the Hard Way About Food Storage

This is our six year of prepping, and we are planning to make a full-time move to our retreat location by spring. We believe the Lord is compelling us to move now, and we are working diligently to get there as soon as possible. By the way, if you have been paying attention, the world looks really bad. This weekend was a significant eye-opener, as we cleaned and inventoried our pantry for the move. I would like to share the experience. However, before we do so, you need to have a bit of our background for a full understanding, so please have a little patience. [Read more…]

Let’s say that you have just acquired a fresh kill. But it is a large animal (i.e., deer) and there is no electricity, so your refrigerator and freezer are not options. You could build a fire and have a huge barbecue for your entire neighborhood. But you would rather preserve some of this meat to feed your family during the coming months. Well, you can cut the meat into thin strips and dry it or smoke it making jerky. Or if you have a pressure canner and a heat source you can pressure can it. But first you will have to dress it! Ingenious Food Recipes That Helped Our Ancestors Stay Alive – How Millions Survived Famine

A famine is a widespread scarcity of food, caused by several factors including crop failure, population imbalance, or government policies. This phenomenon is usually accompanied or followed by regional malnutrition, starvation, epidemic, and increased mortality. Nearly every continent in the world has experienced a period of famine throughout history. Some countries, particularly in sub-Sahara Africa, continue to have extreme cases of famine. It remains to be the most affected area in the world. And due to climate change, the conditions only fluctuate more and more. Predicting the seasons, as well as when to expect rain to help plant more crops seems to be a challenge. Most programmes direct their aid, and most increased efforts towards this continent. How Did People Survive the Great Depression? – And How You Will Survive Now

A worldwide depression struck countries with market economies at the end of the 1920s. Although the Great Depression was relatively mild in some countries, it was severe in others, particularly in the United States, where, at its nadir in 1933, 25 percent of all workers and 37 percent of all nonfarm workers were completely out of work. Some people starved; many others lost their farms and homes. Homeless vagabonds sneaked aboard the freight trains that crossed the nation. Dispossessed cotton farmers, the “Okies,” stuffed their possessions into dilapidated Model Ts and migrated to California in the false hope that the posters about plentiful jobs were true. Although the U.S. economy began to recover in the second quarter of 1933, the recovery largely stalled for most of 1934 and 1935. A more vigorous recovery commenced in late 1935 and continued into 1937, when a new depression occurred. The American economy had yet to fully recover from the Great Depression when the United States was drawn into World War II in December 1941. Because of this agonizingly slow recovery, the entire decade of the 1930s in the United States is often referred to as the Great Depression. [Read more…]

When The Economy Collapses It Will Be Fast And Hard – What to Do When Everything Goes Crazy

An economic collapse occurs when the government has no money. When the money runs out and an economic depression rolls in it is the beginning sign of a collapse. But as the depression continues for a longer and longer span of time, it becomes increasingly worse. This begins a true economic collapse and conditions can get very bad, very quickly.

What generally happens is that civil unrest begins, followed by increasing levels of poverty. The result is generally a lot of unhappy people and a big mess. It can even become dangerous to go outside because typical law and order break down. In these instances, survivalists are the ones who do the best because they are prepared for anything that comes their way. [Read more…]
